Various documents will be required, including a <em><strong>Certificat de Coutume <\/strong><\/em>(Affidavit of Law)<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and a<strong>\u00a0<em>Certificat de C\u00e9libat<\/em><\/strong>, also called<strong>\u00a0<em>C<strong>ertificat de Capacit\u00e9 Matrimoniale<\/strong><\/em><\/strong>. These will prove to the French authorities that you are free to marry, and that the marriage will be recognized in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>There are more than 35,000 <em>Mairies<\/em> in France, and each has developed its own procedure and list of requirements. The United States Embassy in Paris is not authorized to issue a <em>Certificat de Coutume<\/em>, though it provides an optional form on its website. Many\u00a0<em>Mairies<\/em>\u00a0only accept <em>Certificats de Coutume<\/em> delivered by attorneys licensed in the United States. We will provide you with the appropriate documents. Please note that <strong>we deliver these certificates directly in French<\/strong>, which avoids the delay and expense of a translation.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, a<strong><em> PACS<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(<em>PActe Civil de Solidarit\u00e9<\/em>, a form of civil union) between a French-American couple requires a different type of\u00a0<i>Certificat de Coutume,\u00a0<\/i>which we\u00a0also\u00a0deliver.<\/p>\n<p>Please note that most\u00a0<em>Mairies<\/em>\u00a0require <em><strong>Apostilles<\/strong><\/em> on American birth certificates and other documents.<\/p>\n<p>We also deliver <em><strong>Certificats de Non-Appel<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(Certificates of Non-Appeal), which are necessary for the recognition by French authorities of an American divorce.
